Dollar Self Storage Recycling Program Benefits Local Communities

e-Waste

As technology is advancing at a more rapid pace every year, we are left wondering what to do with our outdated computer systems, cell phones, appliances, and electronics. In 2003, California lawmakers enacted the Electronic Waste Recycling Act (SB20), making it unlawful to discard televisions, computer monitors, and laptops. With the increased awareness of environmental concerns, the question remains as to what to do about e-waste disposal and related landfill overcrowding concerns not to mention the cost of proper disposal.

An answer to this came from the brainstorming of the staff at Dollar Self Storage in Corona, California in the form of a recycling program.

Beginning March 2007, the Dollar Self Storage center at 1065 E. Third Street was the first of our centers to be a certified drop off center for e-waste and donations. The list of accepted items are taken at NO COST to the public. A 360 square foot storage unit has been donated by Dollar Self Storage for the collection of e-waste. As part of its commitment to the community, all proceeds are donated to the Corona Public Library Foundation.

As of November 2009, 128.25 tons of electronics have been donated by 2,429 people which have generated proceeds of $35,000+ to the Corona Public Library.

Due to its outstanding success, similar programs have been established at Dollar Self Storage locations in California, Arizona, and Nevada to benefit local charities.
